Job Description:

The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) is seeking a qualified Chief Engineer to work in the boiler room as the “engineer in charge”.  The applicant must be able to work on a flexible schedule at the discretion of management.  The position is classified within a collective bargaining agreement.  The applicant will be working in a correctional setting assigned to the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction located in Billerica, MA.


Responsibilities to include but not limited to:  Ability to work within a correctional setting, complying with all institutional policies regarding safety and security. Primary responsibility of the Chief Engineer is to develop, maintain ongoing maintenance operation and oversee the efficient 24/7 operations and maintenance of all MSO boiler rooms and building systems, including but not limited to refrigeration, heating, hot water, water treatment, preventive and cyclical maintenance, smoke evacuation systems, A/H units (HVAC), ice machines, ventilation equipment, emergency generators, water softeners, switch rooms, and roof exhausts.  Supervises and manages the work of staff assigned to these areas.  Provides daily supervision and training for staff assigned to the work area.  Ability to maintain and operate all boilers, furnaces and auxiliary boiler equipment such as oil burners, flow meters, pumps, compressors, generators, turbines, chillers, cooling towers, air handlers and other similar mechanical items; start and stop generators and synchronize them on switch board; read gages, adjust equipment and observe operation of all machinery; operate and repair institution heating system; operate firefighting equipment and maintain fire extinguishers; maintain power house logs, gage reading, fuel consumed and similar data. Ability to keep accurate records and generate timely reports as required. Perform and/or assist in other facilities and maintenance duties as needed and required by management.  The Chief Engineer will also be responsible for the proper maintenance, and regular certification and operation of all on site Underground Storage Tank (UST) systems, as the designated Class A/B Operator fulfilling all federal and state regulatory requirements that apply to the systems.

Qualifications:  Must have a valid 1st or 2nd Class Engineer License issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  Must have working knowledge of electricity, plumbing, steam fittings, HVAC systems and all mechanical entities in a boiler room/engineering setting.  Experience as a Building Engineer with experience directing contractors, vendors, and managing engineering staff preferred.  Basic computing skills necessary to operate building automation systems. Must have familiarity with OSHA and Life Safety Codes.  Must be a resident of Massachusetts.  Must have an active valid driver’s license and the right to legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts and the ability to pass a criminal background check.  Must have graduated from high school or possess a GED equivalency certificate.  Correctional experience preferred.  Must have or obtain within 6 months of date of hire, a UST Class A/B Operator license issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  Must be able to attend any other training as required by the department. 


Working Conditions: Working in a correctional facility on an on call 24/7 basis; shift coverage being primarily 7am- 3pm Monday-Friday.  Responsible for insuring appropriate coverage for all boiler room projects and all shifts (7/3; 3/11; 11/7), weekends, nights, and holidays.  Subject to being forced to work over 8 hours depending on operational needs.  May encounter verbal and physical abuse from offenders; may be required to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress; stand and walk for prolonged periods of time; may be required to work alone in an isolated area; may be required to lift and carry heavy objects up to 100 lbs; may be required to work in adverse weather conditions.
