Job Description:

The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) is seeking a qualified professional for the position of Case Manager to work with our veteran population at the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction located in Billerica, MA.  As a member of the Program Services staff, the applicant reports to the Assistant Deputy Superintendent in charge of Program Services and must be able to work a flexible schedule.  Hours of work will be Monday through Friday with two (2) 8am-4pm shifts and three (3) 1pm-9pm shifts subject to change based on operational needs and at the discretion of management.  This is a non-exempt position covered under a collective bargaining agreement.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:  Provide support services, treatment and assist with finding long term treatment programs to veterans re-entering the community from a correctional facility.  Identify incarcerated veterans within both the house of correction (sentenced population) and jail (pre-trial detainees) at intake to determine proper level of assistance.  Provide a psychosocial assessment, as well as referrals and placement services to incarcerated veterans.  Ensure that veterans receive services available to assist them with their treatment while incarcerated.  Must have strong knowledge/access to services/benefits available to incarcerated veterans from community based organizations, as well as state and federal agencies.  Must build partnerships and work with veterans groups in assisting incarcerated veterans.  Must have strong knowledge and ability to assist veterans who have mental health issues and or trauma issues.  Must advocate for incarcerated veterans for all eligible services available to them and must ensure all necessary needs are met for a veteran’s re-entry into the community upon release from the correctional facility; including but not limited to: housing, mental health services, clothing, healthcare, transportation to long term treatment program, as well as all benefits afforded to the incarcerated individual due to their veteran status.  Must be able to work with the veteran’s court treatment team and attend veteran court sessions and assist with court procedures on a weekly basis.  Will be required to work out of the Framingham District Court during veteran court sessions and be an integrated member of the treatment team.  Must keep accurate records and generate timely reports.  Perform and/or assist in other duties as required by the ADS in charge of Program Services or designee.


Working Conditions: Individual may encounter verbal and physical abuse from offenders while working in a correctional facility and will be required to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress. May be required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, work alone in an isolated area, lift and carry heavy objects up to 100 lbs., and be exposed to adverse weather conditions.

Other Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree required.  Must be a resident of Massachusetts.  Must have at least two (2) years of documented experience working with veterans.  Prior experience working in a correctional setting preferred.  Must also have an active valid driver’s license and the right to legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts and pass a criminal background check.  Must have own transportation.  Strong written, communications skills are required.  Must also have strong organizational and time management skills.    Master’s Degree preferred.  Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access preferred.  Candidates shall be cognizant of the confidential and sensitive nature of working in a law enforcement agency.
