The Warden is responsible for the planning, operation, direction, and management of the Mike Durfee State Prison, Rapid City Community Work Center and Yankton Community Work Center. The position will involve occasional overnight travel to the DOC Administrative Office in Pierre, other state prisons, and out-of-state conferences.

The Mike Durfee State Prison - capacity of 1349 inmates, low-medium security prison which includes specialized housing, the Governors Housing Project, inmate vocational and rehabilitative programs. 

The Yankton Community Work Center- capacity of 338 inmates.

Rapid City Community Work Center- Capacity of 416 inmates.

Total Full-time employees for Mike Durfee State Prison, Yankton Community Work Center and Rapid City Community Work center is approximately 190. The annual budget for Mike Durfee State Prison, Yankton Community Center, and Rapid City Community Work Center is $18 million.

Duties include:

  • overseeing the administration of programs, including security, treatment, budget, education, to ensure safe, efficient, and lawful functioning;
  • planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating  initiatives and projects;
  • working collaboratively with other wardens and agency senior staff for system consistency and continuity in operations;
  • working in collaboration with the Governor's housing program and Pheasantland Industries;
  • oversite of  Springfield Vocational Industries to include welding, construction technology, auto body, auto mechanics, bike program;
  • developing, interpreting, and administering policies and procedures;
  • interpreting and implementing state and federal mandates, judicial rulings, laws, administrative rules, and civil service rules;
  • developing working relationships with a variety of governmental officials, law agencies, and citizen groups;
  • providing leadership in staff hiring, mentoring and retention strategies; fostering staff engagement and implementing actions to contribute to fully staffed and functioning units;
  • managing the activities of staff, including officers, supervisors, unit managers, and support staff to ensure safety and security in the facility and the proper treatment of inmates;
  • setting financial goals for the prison and managing the budget;
  • monitoring the success of current activities and continually seeking to improve them, basing changes on the industry, legislation, and research.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.

Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment. Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

A bachelor's degree in criminal justice, sociology, or a related field, and at least three years of experience in corrections or law enforcement administration is preferred.
