JOB SUMMARY & DUTIES

Adobe Mountain School is a 24/7 facility. Shift assignment is determined by the needs of the agency and is not guaranteed or implied at any time during the selection process or employment tenure.

The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections is seeking Youth Correction Officer Is for our secure care schools located in Northwest Phoenix to start our next academy. This position is responsible for maintaining security, discipline, and supervision, in a therapeutic role, on daily basis for youth adjudicated by the court system.

  • Uses portable two-way radio to communicate with officers and staff
  • Checks unit for safety hazards or security violations
  • Searches for weapons and contraband
  • Inspects clothing and possessions of visitors
  • Answers inquiries from parents/guardians, other agencies and departmental staff
  • Manages records, log books, evaluations and other forms
  • Assists teachers with classroom management
  • Maintains daily/weekly classroom attendance records  
  • Attends meetings and training
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Human behavior to include growth, development, needs and problems of youth
  • Proper methods and circumstances requiring use of force
  • Language as it pertains to youth care, custody, treatment and rehabilitation
  • Standard housekeeping practices

Skill in:

  • Verbal and written communications

Ability to:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in varying Arizona weather conditions
  • Learn and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, programs and activities established for the agency
  • Learn and apply methods, techniques and correct practices of security procedures as they pertain to the state’s youth secure care facilities
  • Maintain an understanding attitude toward juveniles in custody
  • Participate in rehabilitation and/or treatment activities
  • Provide assistance, guidance and direction to juveniles
  • Provide positive pro-social role modeling
  • Apply appropriate restraint techniques
  • Respond to emergency situations and provide crisis intervention and first aid/basic life support
  • Maintain a structured and secured environment

 

SPECIAL SELECTION FACTORS

Requires possession of, and ability to retain, a current valid Arizona-issued driver’s license.  Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license records checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).  

SELECTION PROCESS

  • Written basic knowledge exam (On-line)
  • Mandatory Tour of Adobe Mountain School Facility
  • Comprehensive background investigation
  • Drug test
  • Physical exam
  • Predictive Index Survey (Survey not used as a selection factor)

Requires successful completion of a paid six week ADJC Pre-Service Training Academy and a two week paid on-the-job training course.

SELECTIVE PREFERENCE

The preferred candidate will have one or more of the following: a high school diploma or GED; experience working with at-risk youth; military training experience; course work towards a degree in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social justice, counseling, mental health, social work or closely related field.

Bilingual Spanish/English preferred, but not required.
