The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office's (HCSO) 911 Dispatch Division is seeking a full-time Sheriff's Telecommunicator Sergeant to serve as a shift supervisor for the 911 Dispatch Center. This is a civilian supervisory position. The 911 Dispatch Center operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Candidates must be available to work various shifts including day, evening, overnight, on-call, holiday, and weekend hours.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Supervise and direct the work of dispatch center staff in operation of a multi-channel computer-aided communication console, multi-line phone system, Next Generation E911 emergency phone system, and computer aided dispatch system.
  • Write performance evaluations and set goals for all assigned staff.
  • Manage the recommendations for commendations, disciplinary action, and employee grievances.
  • Participate in the interview process; select and train new staff.
  • Develop and maintain master monthly schedules; schedule staff's daily work and assist with the annual shift bidding process.
  • Respond to administrative inquires and complaints from police and fire departments and the public.
  • Disseminate administrative policies and procedures.
  • Write reports, perform research, and manage special projects.
  • Maintain positive relations with internal and external customers including police and fire departments that are dispatched by the Sheriff's Office.
  • Reproduce dispatch recordings as requested and in accordance with data privacy regulations.
  • Update supervisors at shift change.



Best Qualified Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and have:

One of the following:

  • Two years or more of dispatch experience in an approved dispatch environment.
  • One year or more of dispatch experience in an approved dispatch environment and two years of general supervisory experience.
  • Experience:
    • As a lead worker or supervisor.
    • Dispatching police, firefighters, and/or Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
    • As a first responder (police officer, firefighter, and/ or emergency medical technician/paramedic).

Skill in performing complex research involving planning, modification of methods and procedures, and analyzing organizational issues.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; advanced skill in a variety of computer applications.
  • Ability to:
    • Use radio, telephone, and computer dispatching systems.
    • Respond to administrative inquiries and complaints, and prepare reports for intradepartmental use.
    • Serve as a representative of the division at conferences/meetings and serve as the division head in the absence of administrative superiors.

Applicants must have no felony convictions and must successfully complete a drug test and an extensive background investigation that includes criminal, employment and financial checks during the six-month probationary period.
