Under supervision of Facility Warden, responsible for directing and supervising Security Operations of units and/or departments depending on area of assignment. Work is reviewed through direct observation, conferences, reports and other means of supervision.




This is not a comprehensive list of all duties. Duties may include:


  • Accountable to manage a division or work group, as assigned.
  • Directs and oversees activities of certified and civilian staff in assigned area of responsibility. Performs supervisory duties such as instructing, assigning, reviewing, mentoring, correcting and planning work with others.
  • Recommends employee disciplinary actions, recommends, transfers and, promotions.
  • Assists in formulating goals and objectives for long and short term planning.
  • Assurance compliance with the principles of direct supervision in the management of inmate housing units.
  • Maintains data as required.
  • Assists with revising, updating, developing policies and procedures for the jail.
  • Interprets policies, procedures, rules and regulations and ensures that staff members follow same.
  • Ensures adherence with policies and procedures
  • Coordinates and supervises activities of inmates. Responds to inmate requests and grievances,  
  • May oversee construction projects, ensuring contractor compliance with security standards and coordinates repairs of facilities with the Facilities Management Department.
  • May direct and oversee activities of staff assigned to training, new facility transition teams.
  • May provide oversight of the inmate food service operation in compliance with Federal, State, and local mandates. Oversees quality of meals to ensure compliance with Federal, State and local mandates.
  • Attends internal regular or special management meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.




Educational or formal training


Completion of ninety credit hours towards a Bachelor’s degree and working towards completion of the Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and eight years of experience in jail operations, preferably in a direct supervision, environment. , Experience must have been in a management and leadership capacity and two of the six years as a Correctional Lieutenant, equivalent or above.


Must possess and maintain State of Louisiana Correctional Officer certification within first year of employment.


Must possess and maintain a valid State of Louisiana Class E Driver’s License.




  • Experience leading and managing a direct supervision facility with an average daily population of 1,000.
  • Sound knowledge, skills and abilities in jail facility.

Equipment used regularly:


  • Uses computer equipment and software programs, to include data entry equipment and various database programs to enter, store and/or retrieve information on inmates

Standard office equipment and software, including but not limited to, the Microsoft Office Suit, internet browsers, database programs, and copy/fax machines



Physical demands


  • The employee routinely works in an indoor environment, but will occasionally work in outdoor weather conditions. 
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration. The employee works a significant amount of time inside a detention center, dealing on a daily basis with inmates. While good behavior is expected of the inmates, some contact may be had with inmates who are or may be violent or have a mental illness.
  • Working conditions can be highly stressful.  
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
