Job Description:

The City of Staunton is seeking an innovative leader with a proven track record of leading and managing a community, court-services program including direct experience with and in-depth knowledge of community probation and pretrial services, and establishing and maintaining strong partnerships with the judiciary, and law enforcement and other local agencies. This individual will have a comprehensive knowledge of the laws, regulations and procedures governing community programs. The candidate should possess strong management and effective leadership skills, and a strong commitment to excellence, and be an independent thinker and “big picture” visionary with a strategic perspective.

The Director of Blue Ridge Court Services (BRCS) will:

  • Lead, plan, direct and oversee Community Court Services programs for the localities of Staunton, Waynesboro, Lexington, Buena Vista, Augusta County, Highland County, and Rockbridge County;
  • Work with the Blue Ridge Criminal Justice Board (BRCJB)in researching, developing and implementing effective community corrections programming for the Central Shenandoah Valley;
  • Manage BRCS’s fiscal affairs and ensure sound, realistic financial planning;
  • Plan, organize, implement, direct and evaluate service delivery and other BRCS activities in furtherance of BRCS’s mission;
  • Develop and maintain a cooperative relationship with criminal justice leaders, media representatives, other community organizations and the community at large;
  • Maintain awareness of the criminal justice system and of resources for defendants, offenders and other appropriate persons;
  • Provide effective personnel management including supervision standards, training and development goal setting, performance review and evaluation;
  • Provide leadership and management of BRCS’s resources and coordinate day-to-day operations of the office;
  • Interpret BRCS’s programs to the community and to allied organizations and individuals;
  • Serve as staff of the BRCJB and ex-officio member of all BRCJB Committees and serve as a liaison between the BRCJB and BRCS personnel;
  • Maintain knowledge of developments and innovations in the field, including legislation and law on the state and federal level affecting BRCS and its programming, and bring such information to the attention of the BRCJB, BRCS personnel and other appropriate community individuals or organizations and;
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for the effective functioning of BRCS within the scope of the purposes set forth by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Applicants must possess any combination of experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, social work, counseling or a related field, including a minimum of five years of experience in community corrections and demonstrate proficiency and knowledge base of community corrections.
