Join the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DOCR) staff on April 27, 2019 from 8:30 am - 6:00 pm, for an engaging and informative employment event. The event will be held at Montgomery College, Rockville campus - Mannakee Building; 900 Hungerford Dr. Rockville Maryland. Attendees will have a chance to learn more about the exciting career opportunities as a Correctional Officer with Montgomery County Government. Staff will be onsite to provide an overview of the position and work environment. 

 

**IN ORDER TO PRE-REGISTER FOR A TEST TIME, YOU MUST APPLY BY APRIL 23rd, 2019.  FOR THOSE WHO APPLY AFTER THE APRIL 23rd DATE, WE WELCOME YOUR PARTICIPATION ON A WALK-IN BASIS.

 

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications who apply by April 23, 2019, will receive an email providing information on available test times for this event. The written assessment, which includes an updated correctional video scenario and report writing exercise - approximately 20 minutes, will be scored on-site. Written assessments will be administered beginning at 9:00 a.m., and continuing every half hour until 6:00 p.m.

After the written assessment, applicants may take part in an oral board/interview (approximately 15 minutes). Applicants who pass the assessment process and who do not possess disqualifying criteria, will be extended a contingent job offer on the same day and provided with a future Background interview appointment date.

This recruitment will establish an eligible list to fill current and future vacancies. Vacancies may be located at either the Montgomery County Detention Center (MCDC) in Rockville, Maryland; or the Montgomery County Correctional Facility (MCCF) in Clarksburg, Maryland.  Correctional Officers bid for their shift assignments once a year. The shift hours may be:  6:30 AM - 3 PM, 2:30 PM - 11 PM, or 10:30 PM - 7:00 AM. All shifts provide a 1/2 hour per day overtime pay when worked. In order to maintain operating requirements, DOCR will implement special or additional scheduling to meet shift minimum staffing. When this occurs, Correctional Officers are required to work mandatory overtime to meet the shift minimums. This is an essential requirement for the position.  

Correctional Officers are considered "Essential Employees" and must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Newly hired officers receive substantial training and instruction in the applications of basic safety and security policies, procedures, and methods regarding interaction with and supervision of the inmate population; use of equipment, and implementation of general standard operating procedures on-the-job and in a formal classroom setting. Work usually is performed under immediate supervision of a supervisory Correctional Officer or Field Training Officer who initially provides continuous evaluation of work in progress. 

Duties will include:

  • providing a safe, orderly and secure environment;
  • maintaining sanitary and healthful conditions;
  • supervising inmate movements to and from program areas;
  • assisting in enforcing clearly defined institutional rules and procedures;
  • supervising inmate visits;
  • reporting to supervisor or a higher ranking correctional officer those activities/situations that are unusual or irregular and those situations where guidance is needed in order to make appropriate response or take the appropriate action;
  • distributing mail;
  • testifying in court as required

Experience:  One (1) year of post High School full-time work experience or its equivalent.

 

Education:  Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

 

Equivalency:  Successful completion of one (1) year or more of college (full-time student status) may be substituted for the one (1) year of post High School full-time work experience.  Excess work experience beyond the one (1) year requirement may not be substituted for the requirement of Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

 

License:  Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.

 

Citizenship and Age: Individuals appointed to this position must be at least eighteen (18) years of age on the date of appointment and be either a citizen of the United States or a resident alien.
