The Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCCR) is seeking a Sentencing to Service (STS) Crewleader in the Client and Community Restoration Division. The mission of Sentencing to Service program is to provide offenders with a safe opportunity to learn new job skills, gain self-confidence, and complete community improvement/restoration projects to benefit the residents of Hennepin County in a fiscally responsible way.

Sentencing to Service Crewleaders provide a structured work option within the county's justice system that is responsive to the need for offender accountability and compensates victims and communities for the harm done by juvenile and adult offenders. The Sentencing to Service Crewleader will supervise and lead crews to ensure projects are completed efficiently, safely, and with a high level of quality. About the position type:
This position is a non-benefited, limited duration (temporary) position with an irregular schedule. 
This position will be open until filled.
Location and hours:
Sentencing to Service work crews operate seven days a week. Sentencing to Service Crewleaders are assigned to one of two shifts; Saturday through Tuesday, 6:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. or Thursday through Sunday, 6:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. These shifts are awarded based on seniority and staffing needs.

In this position, you will:

  • Provide orientation, transportation, and training to crew members (offenders) who are sentenced by the courts (maximum size of a crew is eleven members).
  • Plan, organize, and schedule community work service projects.
  • Supervise and lead crews to ensure that projects are completed efficiently, safely, and with a high level of quality; motivate crew members and manage conflict and perform work along with the crew members.
  • Maintain equipment and complete inventory of power and hand tools.
  • Communicate Hennepin County Sentencing to Service philosophy, policies, and procedures to the crew and to the community.
  • Prepare documentation for court, probation, and law enforcement staff to provide offender status information and to ensure services are provided and maintain a program log of daily program activities for quarterly reporting to local and state agencies.

Need to have:

  • One of the following:
    • Two years or more of full-time equivalent college or vocational/technical course work in corrections, law enforcement, or related criminal justice or behavioral/social science field.
    • Two years or more of full-time equivalent work experience in natural resources, forestry, agriculture, corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice or a related area.
    • Active military duty with an honorable discharge.
    • Note: Completion of an Evidence-Based Practice Corrections Professional Certificate from an approved school may be substituted for one year of relevant coursework or experience.
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certificates from an approved provider.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
  • Ability to:
    • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
    • Perform strenuous work in varying temperatures and terrain.

Nice to have:

  • Paid and/or volunteer experience working with either adults or juveniles in a lead worker, coach, supervisory and/or mentor capacity with emphasis on directing the work of others.
  • Knowledge of the following:
    • The criminal justice system.
    • How the components of the system interact.
    • The philosophies of the Sentencing to Service program.
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following fields:
    • Construction, Forestry, Maintenance equipment, Environmental cleanup, Landscape, Farming, Gardening, or Wildlife preservation.
  • Ability to:
    • Motivate work crews to complete projects safely and efficiently.
    • Monitor and manage work performance.
