Position Overview:

The Correctional Sergeant provides supervision and training to assigned staff; performs a wide variety of Correctional Officer and supervisory duties; participates in the investigation of crimes, preparation of cases for prosecution, control of inmates and is the Watch Commander for the Delano Modified Community Correctional Facility. Provides training to Correctional Officers.  Performs a wide variety of correctional officer duties related to the operation of the Modified Community Correctional Facility.  Responsible for the supervision of daily operations and of employees within the Delano Modified Community Correctional Facility.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Leads and participates in the operations of the Modified Community Correctional Facility.

· Provides training and supervision to Correctional Officers; evaluates the work performance of assigned personnel.

· Reviews Correctional Officers’ reports, inspects assigned equipment, vehicles, and work areas for compliance with policy, procedure and post orders.

· Provides in service training and briefing regarding policies, procedures and the laws.

· When assigned, serves as a Watch Commander on assigned shift.

· Supervises the conduct of inmates in living areas, during meals and bathing, at recreation, in various testing procedures, and on work and other assignments.

· Patrols grounds, living areas, perimeter security walls, fences, and buildings.

· Coordinates and oversees the work of inmates assigned to mechanical, industrial, maintenance, and other operations.

· Takes periodic counts of inmates.

· Examines incoming and outgoing mail.

· Conducts work within established laws, rules, and regulations.

· Daily interacts with inmates.

· Categorizes and segregates inmates according to established criteria and practices.

· Maintains order and discipline and ensures the security of inmates and staff.

· Takes inmate photographs, fingerprints and arrange for inmate visitations.

· Verifies release of inmates according to established procedures and instructions.

· Promotes acceptable attitudes and behavior of inmates.

· Participates in programs designed to prepare inmates for eventual release to the community.

· Supervises inmate visits, and escorts visitors through the facility.

· Reports infractions of rules or regulations and suspicious or irregular occurrences, and takes or recommends appropriate action.

· Prevents escapes and injuries by inmates to themselves, employees, and others.

· Conducts surveillance and searches.

· Prepares and documents investigations and daily activities and records inmate activities and incident reports.

· Prepares and maintains memoranda, logs, reports and records.

· Participates in required training.

· Performs other related duties.


The five step Salary Range for this position is $24.58 - $29.88 per hour. Salary range placement is dependent on the candidate’s qualifications.  The City of Delano offers an excellent benefit package including:

Other Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California. Possess and maintain current S.T.C. certified Corrections Officer CORE certification. Possess and maintain current POST Firearms Training and Powers of Arrest certification (PC 832). Possess and maintain current S.T.C. certified Chemical Agents and Basic Baton certification. Two to three years of experience as a correctional officer. One year of lead or senior correctional officer experience. Possess a valid California class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
